MANY golfing acquaintances of the Whisperer were mildly amused by the game’s great and good trying to attract new, younger players to the sport, as featured on the back page of last week’s GulfWeekly.
Some of the plans include introducing ‘foot golf’ where players kick a soccer ball around a course by trying to plant it into a series of 21-inch holes and staging tournaments for golfing newcomers with 15-inch holes, which are three times the size of a regular cup.
However, it would appear some New Zealand expats on the island have been playing rugby golf for some time, as this photograph reveals.
One even suggested the holes at the Royal Golf Club should be filled in and replaced by rugby goalposts to enhance the chipping ability of players and changing the rules to offer three points for every hole won.
The bounce is a bit awkward when the rugby-shaped golf balls land, but that may explain the rather large divots found on some of the greens.
