Gulf Weekly Venus too strong for Joga girls

Venus consolidated their lead at the top of the GulfWeekly/ Citroen Ladies Football League with a convincing win over potential threats Joga TFA.

Any chance of an upset was squashed within the first nine minutes when a brilliant strike on goal from Anastasia Salinas in the opening seconds and a fine headed goal from Zain Al Khalifa gave the Venus girls a confident start.

Al Khalifa added a third, before Joga fired themselves back into the game with a well-taken strike by Alaa Al Dirazi.

Shortly after half-time Esra Nouriddin increased the Venus advantage, and Fatima Mahmood made it 5-1.

When Venus were awarded a penalty, goalkeeper Dana Noor stepped up and scored with an unstoppable shot from the spot.

Sara Jalal also notched one for Joga with a superbly taken free kick before Al Khalifa completed her hat-trick in the dying seconds to round off a convincing Venus victory.

Meanwhile, the Arsenal Ladies were up against the Arsenal U21s, needing a victory to stay in the title race, and took an early lead through Katie Eames in the sixth minute.

A brilliantly worked goal from the U21s brought about the equaliser though, when Hayley Kunde and Eleni Tsappis combined to set Phoebe License through for a well-taken finish.

The 21s, however, could not capitalise on the breakthrough and while still trying to play passing football, they were beaten by three more Eames goals, plus one each from Wed Al Jowder and Reema Al Qassab.

With only three games left for each team to play, Venus top the table with 18 points, followed by Arsenal Ladies on 15 and the 21s on 10.

This week’s action sees Venus play Seef Dental, the 21s face The Gunners and the Arsenal Ladies take on Joga TFA.
