Dosa not Bread

Have you ever counted the amount of bread you have every day; or how much you have every week?

Bread is made of wheat and wheat contains gluten, which causes digestive problems for a lot of people.

But what can we eat if we can’t have bread? Let me give you an idea.

There’s an Indian dish called Dosa. It’s basically a mix of lentils and rice that is poured and cooked like pancakes. And it can be eaten with various things.

I like it because it’s very easy to make at home, and it works with brown rice as well which contains more nutrients and fibre. Also, because it contains lentils, it means that it has protein so it works out to be a balanced meal. And the best part? It’s naturally gluten-free.

Mix brown rice and urid dhal (white lentils) on a 3:1 cup ratio.  Soak them in water overnight. Blend them together the next day and let the mixture sit for one extra night.

Then you can pour it into a pan, like pancakes, (with a bit of butter) and serve it with anything. If you want to eat it Indian-style you can have it with lentil curry or coconut chutney; or if you want to have it Arabic style you can have it with hummus and zaatar. Or even Western-style with honey and cinnamon.  All taste great.
A great alternative to bread, without the side-effects!
