A lot of health advisors recommend eating wholegrains for their health benefits.
But which grains are they referring to specifically and is there a difference between them in terms of their health benefits?
Let me give you an easy method to help you differentiate between grains.
Of course whole grains are always healthier than their refined counterparts. So brown rice and brown bread are better, for example. But what differentiates them more in terms of health is whether or not they contain gluten (a protein found in some grains).
The problem with gluten is that it is difficult for the body to digest so it causes issues for a lot of people. It can also cause water retention, excess mucus and congestion in some people. So the less we have of gluten-containing grains the better.
Which grains contain gluten?
Grains that contain gluten include wheat, oats, rye, barley, and bulgur.
And grains that are gluten-free are rice, millet, quinoa and buckwheat (although technically quinoa is a seed not a grain).
In short, have more grains that are naturally gluten-free!
The best method to achieving optimum health is self-education because even within healthy food there are varying levels of health effects.
