Gulf Weekly New man at the helm

Batelco Group chief executive Alan Whelan will assume the lead role for the company’s Bahrain operations following the resignation of Rashid Abdulla, Batelco’s Bahrain chief executive.

Mr Abdulla has served 40 years in the company, having joined Batelco in an engineering role, and subsequently holding several management roles in various departments.

He spent a decade at Qualitynet, Batelco’s subsidiary in Kuwait, where he helped to turn the company into a highly-profitable and customer-focused organisation. In 2011, Rashid was appointed as the CEO of Batelco Bahrain and led the company to some of its ‘highest accomplishments’, the company says, such as the launch of its 4G LTE network in 2013.

“The Batelco board of directors would like to take this opportunity to express its appreciation to Rashid for his commendable contributions to Batelco’s operations throughout his tenure,” said chairman Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

“The search for a new Bahrain CEO is underway, but such a process may take some time. However, we are confident that Mr Whelan with his vast experience in the telecommunications industry will competently lead the day-to-day Batelco Bahrain operation until the appointment of a suitable replacement. Furthermore, he is assured of the full support of the Bahrain executive team to deliver key targets and meet various goals as outlined in Batelco Bahrain’s strategy.”

Headquartered in Bahrain, Batelco Group is listed on the Bahrain Bourse. It has played a pivotal role in the country’s development as a major communications hub and remains a main player as an integrated communications’ provider in a highly-competitive local market.

Mr Whelan said he looked forward to working directly with Batelco Bahrain’s management and staff members.
