Gulf Weekly It’s one-nil to the Arsenal!

FOLLOWING the Eid break, the GulfWeekly-sponsored Bahrain Ladies Football League roared back into action with last season’s champions Venus meeting an ever-improving Arsenal U21 squad.

The youngsters battled from the start to try and keep Venus at bay and although Venus created more of the chances at half time the match remained scoreless.

In the second half Arsenal started to grow in confidence and an early shot by Phoebe License, which struck the post, saw them start to dominate the match.

With play starting to open up and some good connecting passes License once again found space to unleash a shot which, with a slight deflection, sent Venus keeper Dana Noor the wrong way and settled in the back of the net.

Venus pulled together to try to force a goal back with Lamees Saqqa in midfield playing balls forward for new striker Hanna Aburoos to attack, however, these were often intercepted by the partnership of Jennifer Loveland-Rose and Natalie Shultz in the solid Arsenal defence.

With a big squad, manager John Mackenzie, kept rotating his team bringing on fresh legs every few minutes and this also worked in Arsenal’s favour as they continued to create chances to add to their lead.

The match ended 1-0 taking the U21s joint top of the league with Arsenal Ladies who edge it on goal difference.

In the other fixture of the night, RCSI and Seef Dental picked up their first points of the season with an exciting 2-2 draw.

Seef took the lead early on in only the second minute through Ashleigh Packer but that didn’t faze the newly-formed RCSI and in the 16th minute they equalised through Dana Alassi.

With a half time score of 1-1 RCSI came out with an attacking mentality and took the lead on 33 minutes with Maryam Haji grabbing the goal.

Seef then had to take desperate measures to equalise and Mollie Bednarowski came out of goal to latch on to a cross and make it honours even. With both teams creating chances to snatch victory and the vital three points, time ran out and the game ended 2-2.

Tonight the table-toppers clash with Arsenal Ladies playing Arsenal U21s with Venus taking on Seef.
