I have been known to be pulled away in mid-conversation by anything shiny. I actually go into some strange hypnotic trance as I’m lured to accessory displays to admire gems and jewels reflecting off lights and mirrors. Heck, I’ll drag whoever is with me to join in my visual stimulation with ‘Wow, nice hey? So shiny… !’

 Therefore, I don’t know why it took me so long to finally get the ‘statement necklace’ trend. I love all the options from chunky silver chains to gold rush waterfalls, glittery jewelled flowers, over-sized pearls and bobbly bold colourful pieces that can make an outfit pop in two seconds.

I would advise, however, to spend a little more than usual when buying one because you don’t want the statement to be ‘look at me, I’m cheap’. The necklace can be the first visual point of your outfit so you should invest wisely.

I stopped into Parfois in City Centre Bahrain to see its autumn/winter collection and bumped into Ursula Al Borshaid, a proud 30-year resident of Bahrain who has two lovely boys and works part-time at St Christopher’s School in the exam office. She confessed: “I am a regular shopper here. They have a huge variety of handbags, accessories and jewellery and are always ‘on trend’.”

When you start collecting your pieces start with something that can go with multiple outfits like a chunky gold or silver chain and then build into it more unique pieces that can bring bling to absolutely boring.

Here are a few tips on how to wear a statement necklace that can turn your ordinary get-up to glam status:

* Denim button-down with a large fun and colourful bubble necklace.
* Any button-up collared shirt is just asking to be paired with a statement necklace
* Dress up in a little black dress (LBD) with a glitzy diamond jewels piece
* Fasten a collared jewelled piece with a round-neck sweater
* A chambray with neon is ultra-modern
* Layer up: for collar effect, layer chucky necklaces that rest right on top of each other
* Solid peplum or cut-out dress with multicolour neck-wear
* Flirty girly looks are perfect with delicate pieces
* For a fresh autumn look wear one over a fuzzy turtle neck with a blazer or under a wrapped scarf.
