Furious 7 is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. As arguably the most popular street racing/heist action film series around, there was little incentive not to get excited to see the return of ‘the boys’ anyway, but then tragedy struck.
Paul Walker, a cornerstone of the series who had been there since the start alongside Vin Diesel, died as a passenger in a car accident in California on November 30, 2013. With his scenes only half-completed, and the obvious delicacy of the situation, producers put the film on hold as they consulted Walker’s family about their next step.
After the family gave the film their blessing, stating that it would be Walker’s wish for it to be released and that the movie would stand as his final testament to the industry, the script was re-written and Walker’s brothers Caleb and Cody stepped in as stand-ins to finish off the star’s scenes.
The film itself will be a direct follow-up to Fast & Furious 6 and features Dominic Toretto (Diesel), Brian O’Conner (played by Walker and his brothers) and the rest of the crew, including Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson, after they return to the United States with their criminal records wiped clean.
However, it isn’t long before trouble stirs again as Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), brother of the defeated baddie in the last film, is seeking revenge and kills one of the crew, forcing the rest to go after him before they are found themselves.
I personally can’t wait to see the latest edition to the series, not just to see how they pay a poignant tribute to Paul, but because they’re simply great action films.
The first one was a classic of the genre, and although the series lost its way a little after that, Fast Five was a re-energising of the series and a runaway success, which was backed up by the sixth instalment.
With crazy stunts, edge-of-your-seat action and a loveable cast with terrific chemistry, and the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix fever setting in, I’ll be eagerly queuing up for a ticket come special Furious 7 Press Preview screening day alongside our lucky competition winners, of course.
