The Hisham Cup competition, held at Awali Golf Club on Friday, recognises quality golf play with the Cup, associated medal and accolade of ‘overall winner’ awarded to the person with the lowest gross score and other prizes for nett scores.

With the presence of summer making itself known, at least six players, both Bahraini and expatriate, failed to complete their rounds, with some ‘delicate darlings’ only lasting three holes, while some others sought rescue by the club’s transport to return them to the cool of the clubhouse.

The hot, dry wind that lasted most of the day switched to a strong northerly wind late afternoon, bringing a short, sharp wall of dust across the course. One group found themselves inside a mini-tornado – as they were teeing off at the 15th hole.

Khalid Salem came home well ahead of others with the lowest gross score of 70. However, the sponsor had stipulated that winners must be present at the prize-giving to receive their awards, including the cup and associated lowest-gross medal. Being absent, Khalid forfeited his title and Ali Musbah, with a gross 75, was declared overall winner and recipient of the Hisham Cup.

The top 10 nett winners were also in the prizes. But seven of them were not present, and thus the forfeited (F) prizes allowed some unexpected smiles all the way down to 17th place.

Full nett results: 1st Jeff Paa nett-63/gross-84, 2nd (F) Khalid Salem (66/70), 3rd Jo Pawson (67/92), 4th Les Young (68/96), 5th Mubarak Saad Sultan (68/76), 6th Lynn St. Lawrence (68/90), 7th (F) Hussain Salem (69/75), 8th (F) Ali Danesh (70/87), 9th (F) Reynaldo Alejandro (70/87), 10th (F) Richard Timmis (70/90), 11th (F) Anil Nair (70/86), 12th Salah Al Shaer (70/79), 13th Nasser Eid (71/82), 14th Ian Ring (71/79), 15th Abdulla Mubarak (71/79), 16th Ali Musbah (72/75), 17th Mohammed Khalifa (72/87).

Atiq Majali, sponsor Hisham Abdulrahman’s representative, gave away the prizes.

Club Captain Abdul Elah Fakhroo, amongst his thanks to those who organised the event, highlighted Richard Loker as tournament director (assisted by Paul Beaumont) who had to administer the results and prize awards. Fakhroo also presented Serwin Rampersad, a newly-joined club member, with his first handicap certificate.
