Five-time world champion and Bahrain Endurance 13 member Javier Gomez notched another victory to his collection of accolades when he crossed the finish line first in Rio de Janeiro at the 2015 ITU World Olympic Qualification Event. His win has secured him a spot on the Spanish team for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.
He said: “It feels great to have my qualification for Rio. I enjoyed racing the course, it was a tough race but I felt quite good. I was saving some energy for the last two laps of the run because I am training for World Championships, so it was nice to win. I wouldn’t say it was easy, but it was controlled so I am really happy.”
Meanwhile at the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon, James Cunnama, who had won the title in 2012, came in second in the long distance race.
Caroline Steffen and Brent McMahon are set to defend their titles at the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines on Friday. Steffen is looking to make history by winning a record fourth race. She says: “The slogan says: ‘It’s more fun in the Philippines’. That’s why I can’t miss out on this event.”
