Golf Club’s (AGC) first 18 hole competition of the season, the British Airways Medal, saw Hamad Fares
Al Qutami soaring to success winning both the best gross and best overall (net) prizes.
Hamad Fares decimated the front 9 holes in just 31 strokes and went on to post an impressive 3
under par 67 gross, 63 net. Ali Danesh was a close second with 64 net, winning on countback from Derek
Hutchinson and Serwin Rampersad also on 64.
The BA Medal started life as the BOAC Cup and the competition is currently the longest,
continuously running, externally sponsored competition at AGC. It was first played in 1944, and is
believed to be the longest-running sponsored competition in the Gulf region of any sport.
British Overseas Airways Corporation, BOAC, was rebranded in 1974 to British Airways, and BA
continues to sponsor the competition.
During the prize-giving Club Captain Bill Scarth announced that his single most pleasing activity
as captain is awarding new handicaps. He then went on to present Lee McIlear with his first handicap
of 25.
Lee is only nine and believed to be the youngest ever new handicap at AGC.
Head professional, Matt Chalmers, added: “I’ve been working with Lee over the last year and it is
fantastic to see his development. He has been beating his dad, Jamie, for quite a while now and will
soon be beating the rest of the club!”
