Gulf Weekly Revamped all-terrain SUV

The new 2016 model of the Toyota Land Cruiser has been revealed at a launch at the E K Kanoo showroom in Sitra … and the Japanese marque is confident that it will continue to see healthy sales in the kingdom.

The ninth generation of the luxury SUV, the most popular vehicle on the highways of Bahrain, has focussed on improving its off-road capabilities and refining the interior with an emphasis on passenger comfort.

The Land Cruiser’s traditional body-on-frame construction has always allowed it to tackle the toughest terrain, while sophisticated handling, suspension and drivetrain systems have been incorporated on the 2016 version to improve driving comfort.

The range of advanced active-driving control features includes the Crawl Control System and the Active Traction Control system. Other features extend to a Multi-Terrain Monitor used in conjunction with Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) to help drivers confirm their surroundings when driving off-road.

Adding to the versatility of the Land Cruiser is the Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) system and the Downhill Assist Control (DAC). In addition, the vehicle features four-wheel Active Height Control and Adaptive Variable Suspension (4-Wheel AHC & AVS), a fully adjustable system that also provides spring rate control to give exceptional performance off-road.

Under the bonnet, the model packs a 5.7-litre V8 engine, which produces 362 horsepower and 540Nm of torque.

Sadayoshi Koyari, chief engineer, said: “The Land Cruiser is a true all-terrain four-wheel drive SUV that has always exceeded expectations. It offers elegance, sophistication and luxury while being tough and practical. Moreover, it represents a luxurious bridge between civilisation and adventure while offering not just excitement but also utility. The new Land Cruiser reaffirms a tradition of quality and advanced technology.”

The revamped interior now features a piano black finish on the display panel for a precise and high quality appearance, a newly adopted Optitron meter, 11.6-inch dual display screens with Display Angle Adjustable Mechanism and multimedia entertainment for rear seat passengers.

Design changes include perforated leather trim front seats and a leather trim steering wheel that features controls for the audio system, multi-information display and Bluetooth hands-free phone system. Storage for small items has been added to the centre cluster, and a wireless smartphone charger is available as an option. There are four interior colour schemes to choose from.

The starting price is BD15,500.
