Hamad Fares Al Qutami emerged the winner with a gross score of 70 in a thrilling contest in the first edition of the Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Fares Al Khalifa Cup hosted at Awali Golf Club (AGC).
The top five players were separated by only one stroke at one of the oldest desert courses in the Gulf region. There was a record entry of 120 players and the day’s play took place in almost perfect weather conditions leading to many good scores.
The late Shaikh Abdulrahman was a career diplomat who served as Bahrain’s Ambassador to London and Washington. He listed his leisure interests as golf, reading and relaxing with his family. He was a member and keen supporter of AGC and his children have fond memories of walking with him when he played at the desert course.
In memory of Shaikh Abdulrahman’s playing years at the club and his love of the sport, his son and daughters hosted this special tournament and asked that it be open to all members of AGC and Bahrain Golf Club and to men and women of all nationalities.
At the presentation ceremony in the clubhouse later in the evening, Club Captain Bill Scarth thanked Shaikh Abdulrahman’s family for their generous sponsorship of the tournament and presented them with special mementoes.
The prizes for the winners were presented by Shaikh Fares bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa after which players and guests enjoyed a sumptuous dinner.
