ONE of the kingdom’s leading universities has set up a fund to support bright low-income students to help them fulfill their academic potential.
The Applied Science University this week launched a Student Support Fund initiative with an annual budget of around BD70,000 approved by the university’s board of trustees.
Its chairman Professor Waheeb Al Khaja, said: “I want to emphasise our commitment to support high achievers who are in need of financial support to help them achieve their dreams and aspirations.”
The university, which has almost 3,000 students enrolled, recently held its first meeting of the newly-launched fund’s committee that will allocate the funds.
The President of the University, Professor Ghassan Aouad, who chairs it, announced that full and partial scholarships have been granted to a number of charitable organisations in Bahrain to support deprived students and orphans provided that they are academically-gifted and capable of finishing their studies. Remaining funds will help support existing and potential students of the university.
Approximately 20 to 25 students with full scholarships, or 40 to 50 students with partial scholarships, will be funded. All subjects taught in the university will be covered.
Applied Science University, boasting state-of-the-art facilities on the edge of Sitra, obtained its license from the Ministry of Education in July 2004, making it one of the first private universities to offer tertiary education programmes in the kingdom.
The university’s colleges and departments offer both undergraduate and graduate programmes leading to the Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in a number of English and Arabic specialisations. Subjects covered include accounting and finance sciences, business administration, political sciences, management information systems, computer sciences, graphic design, interior design and law.
Dr Faiza Zitouni, the dean of student affairs and evening studies at the university, urged interested students to apply now. The last day for applications will be August 31. All applications will be reviewed in early September and successful applicants will be informed.
Sameer Abdulla Nass, the chairman of the university’s board of directors, added that the university was ‘keen to serve and support’ the young of Bahrain. The criterion for applying for financial help from the fund is listed on the university’s website. Visit www.asu.edu.bh for more details.
