COMPETITORS and motorcycle racing fans are looking forward to the start of the second Bahrain Superbike Championship (BSBK) at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC).

The BSBK schedule for the new season, which includes six rounds, is set to commence with an official test day on Friday, October 7.

The race rounds will then begin on October 21, with the second and third rounds scheduled to follow on November 25 and January 13, 2017 respectively.

Rounds 4 and 5 will be held on February 11 and March 3, 2017, with the series closing in round 6 on April 21st 2017.

The organising committee of the championship revealed that the season would also showcase a newly-designed motorcycle emblazoned with the colours of the Bahrain flag.

“BSBK is a competition in riders racing skills. The 15 participants will all use identical bikes. It is a great chance for all aspiring riders to test their individual racing skills and compete for a title,” said BSBK’s Hussein Al Kooheji, who founded the event with Abdulrahman Almoayed.

“There are important rules in racing which all riders have to carefully follow to avoid disqualification and as a safety measure.”

It is worth noting that the championship’s previous season witnessed both regional and international participation, with professional Qatari rider, Mashel Al Naimi, from the Ooredo Racing team, taking the title with a score of 300 points, whilst teammate Fahd AlSuwaidi came in as runner-up with a tally of 188 points.

The series started off its first season in the presence of Spanish world superbike champion, Carlos Checa, in addition to Italian head of the Ducating Riding Experience, Dario Marchetti.

Both celebrity riders were invited to view and work with the riders in order to improve their skills and to gain insight on their expertise in racing. “This is what all motorcycle riders here in Bahrain and even other GCC countries have been waiting for. This is the start of the motorcycle era in Bahrain and in the region,” Almoayed added.

“We have the best track venue in the whole Middle East to experience superbike championship racing and fulfill every riders dream to enter a race competition.”

The organisers behind BSBK were particularly delighted that the BIC stepped forward as an official sponsor of the championship’s second season.

BIC’s CEO Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa said the circuit was ‘excited and proud’ to continue its affiliation and sponsorship of the BSBK Championship and to work with the team towards giving the series a permanent place in the circuit’s roster of events.
