One of Bahrain’s leading universities has celebrated a ground-breaking partnership with a British institute, in a move that is a boon for the kingdom’s booming education sector.
The Applied Science University (ASU) held a lunch reception, under the patronage of the British ambassador to Bahrain Simon Martin, to commemorate the opening of its College of Engineering, in partnership with London South Bank University (LSBU).
This is the first time a private university in the kingdom has hosted an international award across the engineering field. Professor Ghassan Aouad, president of the ASU, told GulfWeekly: “It’s such a great achievement to see a new college and graduate programme attached to the university.
“The fact that we’re offering an engineering degree, in line with the Higher Education Council’s strategy of promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects, means we get a lot of government support and encouragement.
“This is only the start of our partnership with LSBU, we are pursuing avenues in other subjects as internationalisation is the direction we want to go in. It will help our students immensely to earn British degrees as it will improve their skills, make them more employable and allow them to travel and enjoy new experiences.”
As revealed recently in GulfWeekly, ASU is also partnering with Cardiff Metropolitan University to share a school of management, business, and accounting and finance partnership.
There are two British degrees on offer through the programme - B.Eng. (Hons) in Architectural Design Engineering and a B.Eng. (Hons) in Civil and Construction Engineering. Upon successfully completing the programme, students will be awarded a degree from LSBU.
ASU was established 11 years ago and has a cosmopolitan demographic, with staff comprising of 22 nationalities and a student body consisting of 3,000; 85 per cent of which are Bahraini students and 15 per cent expats from around the world.
LSBU was established as the Borough Polytechnic Institute in 1892 and has since developed into a centre focusing on vocational education and professional opportunity.
