‘Wow, I never thought I would be battling mild Assassin’s Creed addiction! But I am. It is so much more fun being Edward Kenway or either of the Frye twins than the regular old Saamia who is applying to universities and working through A Levels.

That feeling of ‘being right there’ that I get when sitting with my nose almost touching the TV screen and drawing my cutlasses, hidden blades and pistols on instinct definitely excites a lot. Even off the gaming time, I rationally understand that I must be punching numbers into my graphing calculator but what I really want to do is go and punch those Templars and receive rewards!

What I did notice while typing this sentence was, the main culprit is rewards! Games have missions, each lasting not more than 40 minutes and just after that, we get the score or the game money along with the next mission unlocking. We all work for rewards, it’s just the form that varies, some of us work for appreciation, some for Mammon, some for respect and so on. Academics on the other hand are a year-long effort and have exams to which we receive results almost three months after, like university applications.

I feel that all us students can use this in a more positive way, by setting our own targets and completing them and subsequently ‘rewarding’ ourselves with whatever we like. It is a strange thing to write about but I feel it could be a hack worth working with!
