Awali Golf Club displayed an Irish flavour last Friday, staging an 18-hole competition sponsored by the Electricity Supply Board of Ireland’s consultancy division, ESB International.

This was the second year of sponsorship by ESBI and whereas last year’s format was medal, this year’s was Stableford and in clear but breezy conditions, 73 players took on the challenge.

With a closely fought contest for the top slot, Joo Sik Han came out of the stew just above others, winning the competition with 38 points. Han received his handicap only this season, and this was the second consecutive week where Friday’s overall winner was playing in his first competition season.

Back in the clubhouse, despite the air-conditioning still apparently working and the walls coated in anti-fungal paint, the humid atmosphere had caused a sprouting of shamrocks.

Master of ceremonies vice-captain Serwin Rampersad, assisted by tournament director Susan Scott, commenced the post-golf proceedings with thanks to the sponsors, and presented a handicap certificate to recently joined member Steve Safrany, noting that he was once a 12-handicapper but is returning to golf with a handicap of 18.

Prizes with a fitting theme - all needing a supply of electricity so as to meet their owner’s expectations - were presented by ESBI’s country manager in Bahrain, Tom Ralph.
