The luxury car segment has another heavyweight racing into contention in the New Year as Mercedes-Benz Cars Middle East (MBCME) unveiled its flagship model, the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, at a recent event in Abu Dhabi.

Held during the final race weekend of the Formula One season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the launch event was attended by five-time Formula One world champion and Mercedes-Benz driver, Lewis Hamilton, who presented the car to media and guests in attendance.

Lennart Mueller-Teut, head of marketing and communications MBCME, said: “It brings us great joy to unveil this beautiful new model in the region. Mercedes-Benz and AMG have come together to create a car that seamlessly embodies our racing heritage, as well as our vision for the future with a car that delivers power, driving fun, and everyday utility in a way few cars can match.”

The striking silhouette and dynamics of the German marque’s latest masterpiece puts the new model in the portfolio of its two-door brother at first glance. The expressive design with the low bonnet, dominant front and muscular body language emphasises the sporty genes of the four-door coupé.

The output of the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine has been enhanced further, delivering 470 kW (639bhp) and a maximum torque of 900Nm, which is available over a wide engine speed range from 2500 to 4500rpm. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is possible in 3.2 seconds, with a maximum speed of 315 km/h.

For maximum efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has also equipped the V8 engines with the AMG Cylinder Management deactivation system. In the partial-load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which crucially reduces the fuel consumption. The transition between these two operating states is immediate, fast and torque-neutral, so the occupants do not have to relinquish any comfort.

The transition from rear-wheel to all-wheel drive and vice versa is seamless with the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. The best possible torque split is continuously computed according to the driving conditions and driver’s input. Alongside traction and lateral dynamics, the all-wheel drive also improves the longitudinal dynamics for even more powerful acceleration.

The Drift Mode is suitable for fully variable torque distribution; in the S version of the four-door AMG GT it is standard, and in the other models it is available as an option. This can be activated in the RACE drive programme using the shift paddles. The Drift Mode allows the model to turn into a purely rear-wheel drive car.

When it comes to the seats, too, Mercedes-AMG proves that comfort and exclusivity need not conflict with a performance-oriented vehicle configuration. The driver’s and front passenger seat can be configured in different scenarios. The selection ranges from the sporty, comfortable seat and a seat with elegant diamond quilting to an extremely contoured performance seat with an integral head restraint.

The four-door AMG GT also offers different seating configurations to meet all demands for the rear, too. These range from an asymmetrically folding rear bench seat for the family to two variants with two individual seats respectively. The High-Class variant has everything a business sedan requires. The rear passengers can select diverse features via a touchpad screen integrated into the console between the seats.

The boot capacity of up to 395 litres is supplemented by a further 60 litres beneath the boot floor.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé will be available in the region in Q1 2019.
