Pizza-making legend Errin Stone, better known as ‘Mr Slice’ by food fans across the kingdom, has passed away after losing a five-month battle in hospital after suffering a stroke and heart attack.
He had remained in a comatose state in an intensive care unit for most of that time with his teenage son lovingly by his side.
Aspen, 19, who is following in his father’s culinary footsteps, is working on repatriating his late father back home to Canada. The Consulate of Canada in Bahrain is offering ‘help and assistance’, he said.
It has been an emotional rollercoaster time for Aspen and for Mr Slice’s many pizza-loving followers as they have been praying for his recovery and rallying to his aid ever since he fell ill in January whilst seeing off a friend at Bahrain International Airport.
He was taken to King Hamad University Hospital where he underwent two operations, one of which his son explained, included removing a piece of his skull to help relieve pressure because of the amount of bleeding caused by the stroke. Mr Slice also underwent a tracheostomy procedure to aid his breathing.
The 54-year-old chef, known by fans as the man with ‘a big voice, personality and heart to match’ was admitted to a recovery ward following surgery but then suffered a cardiac arrest and was moved back to ICU, as reported earlier. His vital signs were stable but his eyes remained closed until he died.
Aspen created a GoFundMe page to raise funds to take him home to Canada for further treatment and more than 64 supporters helped raise $6,150 of a $10,000 target.
Aspen recently updated the fundraising page by saying: ‘Almost five months he was fighting to stay with us … may he rest in peace.”
