Combining certain colours can enhance a space by either making it light, airy and inviting or dramatically bold and moody.

Black and gold are powerful complementary hues that are both luxurious and timeless that adds a depth and darkness to any design set, with a dash of metallic glamour contrast.

The use of the two shades is believed to date back to the time of ancient Egypt, Constantinople and Rome.

In present time, interior designers are using the high-contrasting colours in the form of paint, wallpaper, tiles and décor. This duo can be used in a variety of styles ranging from the contemporary to the vintage and Victorian.

Glam up your living and dining room

People tend to steer clear of dark and bright colours in these two spaces and instead use neutral backdrops to allow residents the chance to switch between trends to complement the changing seasons.

However, those looking for a hint of sophistication can opt for this colour combination through lighting fixtures, furnishings and golden accents. Black wall paper or one darkly-painted focal wall can be enhanced using the right type of golden covered lighting fixture or even decorative pieces strategically placed around the room for contrast. That will brighten up the space.

A sparkling bedroom

Add a hint of black and a whole lot of gold for a shining glow. Hang up dark shades of grey or even purple to complement bold black throws and pillows. As for the metallic touch, use a golden hued paint with a matte finish so that the bedroom offers an appealing ambience. Complete the look with golden nightstands, fixtures and bedding.

Dripping with drama

This colour combination transforms bathrooms into showstoppers. A dark bathroom symbolises indulgence while the gold offers a shimmering elegance. It’s quite easy to find sinks, faucets and other bathroom fixtures in a golden hue and it does not look out of place in a modern settings. Black tiles and cabinets can create a vintage art deco style.
