Do you ever find yourself wishing you had a Magic 8-Ball to make your decisions for you? Can’t make up your mind often? If you answered yes to either one of these questions, welcome to the club – that is, the indecision club.

It is fairly recently that I realised just how indecisive I can be. Whether you can’t decide between a latte or a flat white to what career you wish to have, you bet you need to start looking for solutions!

In my defense, my indecisiveness is justified. Think about it – when it comes to making a choice never before have we had so many options and more importantly knowledge of these options. It is only natural then that one feels pressure about choosing the best option available or fear of going with the wrong one.

Discerning bad decisions from good ones is an incredibly valuable skill to have not just in the professional world but also when it comes to your personal dealings. But even more confusing is discerning between several good choices.  So, what does one do?

After mulling it over, it became clear to me that indecisiveness comes from a place of insecurity. A perfectionist attitude or a lack of confidence may be governing your indecision and what can help is not feeling like you ‘should’ go with a certain choice, especially if it is to please others.

Another helpful hint would be to use visualisation in your quest for the best choice. Imagining what life would be like after a decision has been made is apparently an effective way to quash indecision.

Next, tune into your feelings. How enthusiastic or how you feel about a certain decision is a good gauge of whether or not you should go with it. Your gut instinct is not to be underestimated.

Finally, and this is especially useful for more major decisions, writing down the pros and cons of each choice can help provide a clear picture of what decision to take. However, if all else fails, the Magic 8-Ball – Internet versions included- still exists! Happy decision making!
