Now this is a Baywatch I can get behind! Hundreds of canines are being spotted on the beaches of Italy and Croatia sporting life vests and saving people from drowning.
There are 300 Life Dogs working the Italian shores. Robert Gasparri, coordinator of the Italian School of Water Rescue Dogs explained that part of their training involves following a specially selected buoy. He told the One Green Planet platform that the buoy goes to a person in need of help, and (also) comes back to the shore by itself, choosing the best landing point and swimming through the safest currents.
The Newfoundland breeds that have been working with the Italian Coast Guard are believed to save about 3,000 people every year. What makes this breed ideal for this is their calm and loving temperament. They also love the water and are said to regard their work as a game.
With the kingdom having a huge stray situation, perhaps people would consider adding Bahrain’s dogs to the life guard scene. Not only could they save lives, but perhaps also change the minds of those who fear them.
