Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, pictured below, gave world leaders something to think about and people around the world lots to ponder over after she stood up in the name of ‘what leadership, courage and sacrifice look like’ at the UN Climate Summit.

No truer words were spoken and her speech touched the hearts of everyone around the globe. It especially struck a chord with IKEA. The Swedish furniture brand is now focussing its attention on becoming a “climate positive” business by 2030. The popular “do-it-yourself” retailer is looking to convert its operations to reduce its climate footprint as it commits to making an impact on the environment.

The company aims to tackle this change by decreasing its greenhouse gas emissions as the business continues to grow. The furniture franchise will be a part of the green movement by collaborating with its more than 1,000 suppliers to create products that are designed to be “repurposed, repaired, reused, resold and recycled.”

The brand will also strive for 100 per cent renewable energy use throughout its operations and plant-based foods will be produced and sold by the retailer, including its popular meatballs. It will also offer solar home products and a larger array of LED lighting. According to an IKEA executive, the company will also support its suppliers with their green efforts to ensure that products are environmentally produced through the sourcing of materials, manufacturing, and transport of goods.

Some of the initiatives that the company is including to support the “greener good”, for example, are selling plastic products based on renewable materials made from the sugar cane industry and committing to using 100 per cent sustainable cotton in its mattresses, linens and other products.
