Bahraini May Al Doseri and Dr Nahla Al-Sunni have racked up medals in the first-ever Arab Billiards and Snooker Federation Cup held in Egypt and hope their winning ways will inspire more women to give it a shot.

The dynamic duo are thrilled with their achievements in the event, held at the Cairo International Stadium, which featured players from 16 countries vying for victory in 12 competitions in billiards and snooker, including the singles and doubles categories for men and women.

There were six billiards and four snooker competitions for men and two billiards competitions for women.

Al Doseri, a 34-year-old cluster learning and development manager in the hospitality industry, took bronze in the 9ball event while Al-Sunni, a 32-year-old dentist, won gold in the 8ball and 9ball competitions.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Al-Sunni, who is ranked first in the sport in the kingdom. “I’ve never experienced this happiness before – representing the kingdom is a pleasure and winning two golds without a coach in this competition means the possibilities are endless. If we have a coach, we will be able to achieve more soon. Winning two golds wasn’t easy and keeping the title for Bahrain won’t be easy, so I will need more practice and motivation.”

Al Doseri added that it was an unforgettable emotional experience, which she is proud of.

“We made history for Bahrain in billiards for women, it is a huge achievement,” said Al Doseri, who is second in the kingdom’s rankings. “I hope this will inspire more Bahraini women to join us in the competitions to come. I look forward to continue this legacy and of course, aim higher.”

To sharpen their skills and keep the momentum going, the women are participating in local open competitions at several billiard halls.

Al Doseri has been practicing the basics, doing drills, meditation and focusing on mental training as the mind encompasses every physical, mental and strategic aspect of the game.

“This great game involves lots of strategic thinking, controlling the cue ball and all other object balls on the table,” explained Al-Sunni.

There will be a GCC competition happening towards the end of the year as well, with further details to be disclosed in the future.
