The show 1899 has become a thing of the past after Netflix cancelled the multi-lingual sci-fi drama to the dismay of thousands of fans.

Season one was released on November 17 last year starring Wythenshawe-born Emily Beecham as a young English doctor, alongside German Andreas Pietschmann as the ship’s world-weary captain and Welshman Aneurin Barnard as a mysterious man who boards the ship.

The show, which was centred on a group of immigrants travelling to America on a steamship before a series of mysterious events threw them into a supernatural nightmare, was created by German showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, who returned to the platform following their hugely successful series, Dark.

People simply couldn’t get enough of it as more than 79 million hours of watching were logged in the first three days of its release on the platform. Just when its fans thought it couldn’t get any better, the series finale ended with a huge genre-bending cliff-hanger that left them begging for answers…. which they will never get.

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season as we did with Dark,” Odar said on Instagram confirming the series would not be renewed by Netflix. “But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life.

“We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

This did not sit well with viewers, particularly with Jiří Matouš, who launched a petition on Change.org urging the streaming platform to have a second season.

“1899 was clearly created with multiple seasons in mind,” he said. “After the first season, there were a lot of unanswered questions and a big cliff-hanger at the end of the last episode. We want a renewal of the show and a proper end to the story.”

More than 75,000 fans have signed the plea making it the top signed petition on Change.org.

Matt Davidson said on Twitter: “I honestly feel like Netflix just needs to stop greenlighting complex multi-season stories when they’re so jittery about renewals.

“If you don’t want to commit, stick to movies or mini-series and let the other platforms pick up long-form storytelling.”

Another fan, Wesley Leuschner, said; “I have been waiting for years for this show and I can’t believe they’re ending it. They left on a massive cliff-hanger and that’s not right. Bo and Jante deserve better.”
