BAHRAIN’S sporting stage is set to welcome para-athletes from around the world next month to participate in the International Paralympic Badminton Championship for the second year in a row.
The Bahrain Paralympic Committee (BPC) and Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation hosted more than 180 para-athletes from 33 countries last year, and BPC chairman Shaikh Mohammed bin Duaij Al Khalifa is thrilled to welcome them to the country once again.
“Being selected to host the International Paralympic Badminton Championship is evidence of the great reputation that the kingdom enjoys in organising the largest sporting events in the world, especially Paralympic sports,” he said.
“It is worth noting that the committee has hosted a number of regional and international tournaments with the aim of promoting sports tourism in a way that supports the objectives of Bahrain’s tourism strategy for 2022 to 2026.
“It is also an important aspect in supporting the national economy and Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 by making the country a global destination for sport as well as promoting inclusivity.”
Over the years, the BPC has held the Asian Youth Para Games as well as the West Asian Paralympic Games.
While details of the number of athletes and sporting categories are yet to be announced, the committee has shared that delegations from across the globe will be in attendance and the championship will be held from May 17 to 24.
The BPC looks forward to welcoming everyone to this major sporting spectacle.
Shaikh Mohammed also praised and appreciated the continuous and unlimited support of His Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS) chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, as well as SCYS First Deputy President, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
The official tournament logo in the colours of the flag has been launched, symbolising the game of badminton with a palm tree in the middle to highlight the kingdom’s heritage as it’s ‘the country of a million palm trees’.
