Comic lovers can rejoice this Eid weekend and snuggle up for the long-awaited fantasy adventure comedy film Nimona, based on the graphic novel of the same name.

Featuring the voice of Chloë Grace Moretz as the titular character and Riz Ahmed as her partner and former knight, the film has survived eight years in production hell to finally see the day of light.

The 99-minute film tells the story of Nimona, a teenager with the power to shapeshift, who is targeted by a knight for assassination. The knight’s mission to kill Nimona becomes complicated when he is accused of a crime, and learns that Nimona may be able to exonerate him.

Based on a web comic by ND Stevenson, the animated feature film rights for the movie were first acquired in June 2015.

The film was to be produced by Fox’s former subsidiary, Blue Sky Studios, alongside Vertigo Entertainment.

In June 2017, 20th Century Fox scheduled Nimona to be released on February 14, 2020. In March 2019, The Walt Disney Company completed its acquisition of Fox and then in May 2019, the film was delayed to March 5, 2021.

In November 2019, the film was delayed again and then on February 9, 2021, Disney announced it was shutting down Blue Sky Studios, and that production of the film was cancelled.

Then, last year, the film was picked up again by Annapurna Pictures and now, eight years after it was first green-lit, it is finally set to see the light of screen.

Christophe Beck has composed the film’s score and American rapper K Flay performed the original song called T-Rex for the film’s soundtrack, releasing it last on Friday.

Nimona will be streaming on Netflix this Friday, June 30.
