It is the end of an era for one of the most popular fantasy franchises to hit the small screen, as Henry Cavill is set to hang up his silver wig as the lead of The Witcher this weekend.
The second half of the third season of The Witcher, and the last to star Superman star Henry Cavill as Geralt, is set to start streaming tomorrow, July 27, on Netflix.
Fans of the franchise need not fret, however, as Liam Hemsworth is set to take helm as the ‘new’ Geralt. Rumours suggest that there will be at least five seasons of the series, not including spinoffs.
The first half of Henry’s final season aired on June 29 and the final three instalments of the eight-episode-long season will take us back to our favourite found family of fantasy - Geralt, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri (Freya Allan), plus their friend Jaskier (Joey Batey).
Season 3 is inspired by the second instalment in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher book series, Time of Contempt, and will finally see Geralt reckoning with his feelings after two seasons of steely, tough-guy detachment.
“For years, Geralt has claimed neutrality, shunned politics and publicly asserted that witchers don’t have emotions — all to make his life as a killer easier to navigate,” creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich explained.
“We’ve seen him battle monsters and monstrous humans; we’ve watched as he’s hardened himself in order to survive. This season, he can no longer do that.”
