Hip-hop is celebrating its 50th birthday this year, and amongst the festivities is a new docuseries honouring the greatest women to ever grace the genre.

The new four-part docuseries Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop is set to drop today, August 9, on Netflix.

According to the official descirption, the series recontextualises “the role the irrepressible women of hip-hop played throughout the revolutionary genre’s 50 years by reinserting them into the canon where they belong: at the center, from day one to present day.”

Each of the four episodes will feature a mix of ‘old school’ artists like Queen Latifah, Sha Rock, Remy Ma, Yo-Yo, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, Da Brat, Monie Love, Bahamdia and Rah Digga, alongside some of the newer rappers on the block like Latto, Coi Leray and Kash Doll.

Their contributions will be discussed in detail with commentary provided by journalists, record label executives and stylists.

“We have come through a lot,” Queen Latifah says in the trailer of the show that borrows its name from the feminist anthem that appeared on the hip-hop legend’s 1989 debut album, All Hail the Queen. “We have stood back up and will always keep standing up.”

Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop is the latest in a series of special concerts, mix tapes, and limited edition product releases that are marking the genre’s 50th birthday.

Amazon Music, for example, kicked off its 50 & Forever series of live performances, discussions and festival broadcasts last month.

The series starts streaming on Netflix today.
