ACTION fans better get ready as Hollywood icon Tom Cruise is gearing up to fly back for a third installment of Top Gun.

According to a report in the website Deadline, Ehren Kruger, co-writer of Maverick, the second Top Gun film, is penning a draft of the next sequel.

Tom is expected to star in another iteration of the high-octane aviation movie franchise, which is being worked on by Paramount, despite his huge ‘non-exclusive’ deal with rival studio Warner Bros.

Tom’s last deal with Paramount ended in 2006 and the latest deal with Warner Bros would see him producing and developing new films for the studio, including those in which he will star.

If the plan for Top Gun 3 is cemented, Tom could be reunited with Miles Teller and Glen Powell, his fellow Maverick co-stars.

The first Top Gun, directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, was released in 1986, with Maverick released in 2022 as a ‘legacy sequel’.

Maverick, which is Cruise’s highest-grossing film ever in his career, is an action drama directed by Joseph Kosinski. The story, which is based on the characters from the first film, shows Maverick confronting his past while training a group of younger Top Gun graduates, including the son of his deceased best friend.

Maverick was nominated for an Oscar and earned nearly $1.5 billion. It was also the second highest-grossing film that year.

Tom is currently working on the eighth Mission: Impossible film for Paramount and Universal’s Edge of Tomorrow, a sci-fi film alongside Emily Blunt and directed by Doug Liman.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two is due to be released in May 2025.
