TV critic Emily Nussbaum is taking her readers behind the scenes in her upcoming nonfiction titled Cue the Sun! The Invention of Reality TV, releasing June 25.

The book will be exploring all things reality TV, from the genre’s invention and its innovators to the fakeness within its realness. Fans will learn about the drama-stirring tricks show editors use, such as the frankenbite, in which a piece of dialogue is created by cutting and merging different lines together.

The author will also be shedding light on the frequent exploitation of reality stars that happens without the genre lovers’ realisation. “The people who are on reality shows are a vulnerable class of people who are mistreated by the industry in ways that are made invisible to people, including to fans who love the shows,” Emily said in an interview.
This is the author’s second book release, with her debut being a collection of essays centring on her passion for TV titled I Like to Watch: Arguing My Way Through the TV Revolution, released in 2019. Emily is known for her contributions as a TV critic in The New Yorker, from 2011 to 2019, which earned her a Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2016
