AN art exhibition showcasing the works of three Arab creatives, exploring diverse themes from cultural heritage to music, emotion and abstraction, is being staged this month, writes Melissa Nazareth.

Artists Hakim Al Akel from Yemen, and Omran Younis and Samer Ismail from Syria, are offering spectators an immersive experience of their vibrant worlds.

Some of their paintings, exhibited earlier in two separate events at Art Concept gallery in Andalus Garden, Gudaibiya, are reappearing in the ongoing ‘summer collection’.

“My pieces are inspired by the intertwining movements of musicians and dancers, and capture the essence of musical performances, transforming melodies into vivid, colourful lines that convey interaction, unity, and emotional resonance,” Hakim, who is renowned for his vibrant use of colours, told GulfWeekly.

Earlier this year, the 58-year-old visual and plastic artist flew down to Bahrain for his third solo exhibition in the kingdom entitled Infinity Hymns. He has a Master of Arts from Moscow State Academy and his artworks have found homes in numerous museums, including Barjeel Museum in Sharjah, UAE. He is also a founding member of the Yemeni Plastic Artists Association.

Plastic arts involves the physical manipulation of a plastic medium, such as clay, wax, paint or even plastic, to create works of art.

Omran and Samer also displayed their works last year in an exhibition entitled Syrian Art. Omran, 53, participates with pieces that delve deep into the emotional spectrum, featuring textured abstract forms with vibrant colour contrasts.

The creative draws a lot of his inspiration from his Syrian heritage.

His exhibits feature thick, loose brushwork that anthropomorphise cacti as representations of ‘resilience’.

“One of my pieces showcases intertwined orange, red, and yellow shapes that create a profound sense of depth and movement. The second, a blue-green cactus against a bold red background, symbolises resilience.

“My work conveys complex emotions and themes, inviting audiences to connect on a deeper level,” the artist, who has exhibited his works at galleries and art spaces in the Middle East, the US, and Europe, revealed.

Samer’s art transcends traditional forms and his latest works feature abstraction. The 58-year-old creative is a member of the Syrian Plastic Artists Union, and has participated in numerous exhibitions in France, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Syria.

“My pieces invite viewers to engage with colour, form and the abstract interplay of elements,” the graduate from the Fine Arts Institute in Hama, Syria, noted.

The exhibition runs until August 31 and is open for viewing from Sunday to Thursday, from 10am to 6pm.
