POPULAR author Sally Rooney’s fourth novel Intermezzo is set to hit the shelves on September 24.

The book tackles two brothers grieving their father. Peter is a successful Dublin lawyer in his 30s who is meditating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two different women - his first love Sylvia and college student Naomi.

Ivan is a 22-year-old competitive chess player who sees himself as socially awkward and a loner. In the midst of his bereavement, he finds himself intertwined with Margaret, who is an older woman.

Sally revealed in an interview that the decision to focus on brotherhood was not intentional, as she started solely writing about Ivan, then Peter came to her from a writing block.

“I suddenly realised that Ivan had a brother, and, in that moment of realisation, I felt I could see the brother’s entire personality, and these other important relationships in his life,” she said.

The 33 year-old writer is best known for her two novels Conversations with Friends (2017) and Normal People (2018) which were adapted into namesake TV miniseries in 2020 and 2022.
