The third instalment of the immensely successful Hunger Games movies was released this weekend, and it did not disappoint. This dystopian, politically charged series has captured the imagination of millions, since there are numerous parallels between our modern world, and the fictional world.
I watched the movie with my father and sister, and it is fascinating to observe how we, as humans, react to a situation with varying interpretations. My sister, a diehard fan of the series (and dressed up as Katniss) was constantly in tears during the movie, while my father was extremely fascinated by the ‘cool aeroplanes’. They might as well have watched separate movies.
Except they didn’t. Where one person sees a convoluted love triangle in ‘Mockingjay’, another sees a satirical political commentary. The fact that we can see the same thing, yet feel contrasting emotions, and take away completely different interpretations is amazing. It is easy to see how this applies in the real world: some people see global warming as a sign for humanity to re-evaluate their lifestyle, while others see it as a way for governments to control their people. Our views, albeit contradictory, are a reflection of our internal and external environment.
