Essa Al Qutami clinched the inaugural Middle East Union Cup with a one over par gross 71 to be the overall gross score winner at the Awali Golf Club.
The emphasis was on quality golf in the competition, sponsored by Middle East Union, with the main prize and trophy being awarded to the player having the lowest gross score.
Al Qutami shone brighter than others and finished one shot ahead of Ali Musbah.
The prizes were presented by Atiq Mujali on behalf of the sponsors and assisted by tournament director Paul Beaumont.
Other prizes were awarded for net scores as follows:
Overall net score winner Ahmed Mohammed (net 64/gross 79), 2nd Salah Al Shaer (67/77), 3rd Abdulrahman Amin (67/73), 4th Adnan Al Sowaidi (68/79), 5th Jeff Paa (68/92), 6th Nasser Eid (68/80), 7th Ahmed Al Noaimi (69/74), 8th Abdulla Al Kaabi (69/80), 9th Sanjeev Bhalla (69/97), 10th Ali Musbah (69/72), 11th Rashid Al Qutami (70/76). However, one of the prize-winners was absent and consequently forfeited his prize, which was awarded instead to Nasser Al Kaabi in 12th place (70/76).
There were a couple of other noteworthy feats during the tournament.
The ladies, with a nearest the pin prize on the fourth hole, managed the dismal accolade of complete failure – six lady players and, unusually, not one of them on the green!
Musbah was highlighted not only for his net score, but also his hole in one on the sixth made more impressive as the pin was located in the most difficult position. He graciously took his medicine as expected by tradition and rang the bell.
To make the taste more palatable and to acknowledge his hole-in-one achievement, Musbah was awarded the unclaimed ladies nearest the pin prize!
