One thing that is hard for people who have never lived in the Middle East to understand is the acceptance and trust of the people. A friend of the Whisperer went for a sweaty stroll in the souq after dinner. She spotted a beautiful silk rug which the owner suggested she take home until the weekend to see if the family liked it in situ. No deposit, no ID … just the woman’s word that it will be returned. “Once again the Bahrainis have blown my mind!” she told friends.

After an entire morning spent firefighting different issues including ‘Working on 137 questions of Maths’, my extended project presentation, falling asleep for an hour by mistake and thinking of all the different tasks I need to complete in the next few days.

It was definitely harder this year to say goodbye to my UK family and friends, despite optimistic plans for future get-togethers, there were too many tearful farewells, and I arrived back in Bahrain with a terrible bout of homesickness.

Somebody called me telling me he was doing some registration online and he mistakenly put my number on what he was registering, that my number is similar to his number and that the password of what he was registering was sent to my phone which I actually saw.
