NOT much is known about Bonifacius Rotarius of Asti, except that he was held captive in the Middle East and, probably through the paying of a ransom, was eventually able to return to his home near Turin.
Perhaps nothing would be known of him at all, were it not for the fact that in honouring a promise made in confinement, Bonifacius made the first ever recorded and undisputed ascent of a mountain peak.
