Spinning is a non-impact exercise programme that utilises a specially-designed stationary bike and a series of cycling movements that provide the participant with a rigorous workout.

The spinning instructor sets the course for the workout by dictating the adjustment of the resistance knob located on each spinning bike. The spinning workout was originally developed by endurance cyclist Johnny Goldberg, (aka Johnny G). Johnny G devised the programme in the 80s while preparing for the 3,000 mile Race Across America. He designed a spinner that he built along the lines of a racing bike with a weighted front wheel, a fixed gear, and an adjustable seat and handlebar.
