Student Scrabble players are being called to take part in a five-round afternoon tournament on Friday, April 13 at Yateem Centre when a 14-year-old whiz kid at the game, Lahiru Elvitigala, returns to Bahrain.

A number of schools report Scrabble players within their student body with Asia School claiming 25 players.
“The April 13 competition would be a good opportunity for Scrabble-playing students to get into the event,” said Bahrain Scrabble League chairman, Roy Kietzman.

Now studying in Sri Lanka, Lahiru began his Scrabble career at age seven in BSL. He ended up twentieth in the World Youth Scrabble Championship in Australia four months ago.
The five-game Friday tourney is open to players of all ages and playing skills.
Lahiru’s father Gamini Elvitigala, who still lives in Bahrain, said those in the Sri Lanka Scrabble Association consider the teenager a graduate of the “Bahrain school of Scrabble” like several other youngsters who excelled at the brainy game.
At 10, Lahiru was voted the most up-and-coming player among BSL members. In 2003, he was cited as the most fun to play against.
The tyke used to become impatient with players who took a long time to make a move, so much so that he would go to his opponent’s side of the table to help him or her make a play.
When Lahiru made his debut in the Gulf Scrabble Tournament a few years ago, entrants from outside Bahrain laughed that such a young participant should be competing.
However, in his initial game in the GST, the child chalked up a win against a veteran exponent in the game from Saudi Arabia, to the applause of the admiring playing corps.
Meanwhile, Ferrer Abordo, took the prize at this week’s tourney at Yateem Centre.
