Claire Cassidy will be joining Chang Han Oh and Ahmed Sultan at the finals of the BMW Golf Cup International in Australia after winning a ladies section play-off against fellow Riffa Golf Club member Linda Boland.
The two ladies tied for first place in Saturday’s qualifying competition at Riffa Golf Club but Claire proved to be too strong for Linda in the play-off, scoring 28 points against Linda’s 26. “Both ladies played very well,” said Riffa’s director of golf, Phil Jones. “They were level on 15 points each after the first 9 holes but Claire maintained a consistent performance on the back 9 to score 13 points against Linda’s 11. “Claire took part in a play-off in last year’s qualifier and unfortunately lost so she is absolutely delighted to have gone through this time.” “BMW takes pride in partnering with world-class, competitive, sporting events. The BMW Golf Tournament Bahrain gives us the opportunity to promote sports within our local community and we look forward to hosting the tournament again next year,” said Paul Yates, general manager, Euro Motors, the exclusive importer for BMW cars in Bahrain. South Korean Chang won first place in the 0-12 section of the tournament with a total of 74 points after achieving an excellent score of 37 points in each of the two rounds played. Ed Daly was second with 70 points (33, 37) and Rob Lane was third with 68 points (33, 35). In the 13 – 28 handicap section Bahraini Ahmed Sultan took first place with 69 points (38, 31) while Chris Milner came second with 68 points on count back (31, 37) and Paddy Gallagher was third, also on 68 points (36, 32). Around 120 golfers took part in Saturday morning’s first-round with the leading 33 per cent of players from each section going on to play a final round in the afternoon. The individual stableford members’ tournament was rounded off with a barbecue and prize-giving ceremony in the club’s marquee where prizes were presented to the winners by Zayed Al Zayani of BMW Euro Motors. The BMW Golf Cup International is the world’s largest amateur tournament series and was started in 1987. This year’s final will be held between and December 3 and 8 at Sydney’s New South Wales Golf Club.
