More than 250 Quality Education School students celebrated World Environment Day.
Education Ministry’s private education directorate and senior educational specialist Fathiya Abdullah Al Mannai was the chief guest. Projects, classified under the theme “What is Global Warming? Causes, Damages and Solutions,” aimed at creating awareness about global warming among youngsters.
A young boy already can’t get enough of his new book, while his classmates are still saying goodbye to their parents on the first day of classes at the Philippine School of Bahrain last week. The students have just enjoyed a three-month break.
A lunch was held at the Bahrain Bayan School, Isa Town, marking the end of the academic year. Present at the event were school director general Yousef Korfali and other faculty members. Several long service awards were presented by primary school principal Dorothy Loveland and secondary school principal Butch Miller. Philanthropist Ameena Nishat and her businessman husband, Hamid Nishat threw a lavish graduation party for their elder son Ahad at their home in Saar. Award-winning Pakistani singer, Shehzad Roy, who has also shared the limelight with Bryan Adams at a recent concert in Pakistan flew in especially for the evening and had the guests dancing to his popular tunes till late hours. Apart from his music Shehzad Roy is also known for setting up Zindagi Trust (zindagitrust.org) that helps build schools for disadvantaged children in Pakistan. The English-language BBC World Service was officially launched in Bahrain last week. BBC 101FM is now broadcasting 24 hours a day, via the BBC’s second FM relay station in the country. The launch was marked at a reception at the home of British Embassy Deputy Head of Mission Stephen Harrison. The event was attended by Information Minister Dr Mohammed Abdul Ghaffar, BBC World Service English networks and news director Phil Harding and BBC World Service business development manager Dr Fouad Razek. Radio Bahrain's current service on 101FM can be found at its new slot at 99.5FM.
A group of St Christopher’s Senior School students took part in the UK Mathematics competition organised by the University of Leeds. The students, aged seven to 13, were among 600,000 participants from across the world. St Christopher’s won 26 gold, 38 silver and 19 bronze medals with certificates. In addition, some students were invited to take part in the prestigious follow-up competitions aimed at finding the best mathematicians. Students Myron Godinho, Samuel Young and Michael Stec also achieved merit certificates.
British journalist-turned-author Greg Hunt signed copies of his book at Jashanmal Bookstores, Seef Mall. Mr Hunt is in Bahrain on a tour to promote his first book They Saddle Dogs, published by Jerboa Books. It is about two men driving a 4x4 from Abu Dhabi to London, but there is far more to the story, says Mr Hunt. He arrived in Abu Dhabi in 1989 to run a sales operation for a British company. He took a postgraduate course in journalism in London in 1996. His book is in the UAE's Top 10 Bestsellers list. Above, Mr Hunt signing books.
Mohammed Abdulkarim Alkhawaja won a Mitsubishi Pajero 2007 car at the second grand draw of the LG’s summer promotion, which was held at the Kooheji Furnishings, Sitra. Thirty-four people won various prizes including the car, LG LCD televisions, car navigators, refrigerators, split and window air-conditioners, washing machines, home theatre systems, flat televisions and mobile phones. The final grand draw will be held on August 6.
