Gulf Weekly Store goes green

Bahrain Maritime and Mercantile International (BMMI) have introduced reusable shopping bags at Al Osra Supermarket in Saar.

They cost BD 1.5-2.5, and Al Osra is handing out 10 BD5 shopping vouchers randomly each week to shoppers.
“We have been looking into this concept for some time now and after reading the recent letters in the GDN concerning supermarket plastic bags, we wanted to make a conscious contribution to help improve the environment,” BMMI chief operating officer of sales and marketing, Mike Eastwood said.
“Using these bags has an enormous beneficial impact on the environment in which we live. I'm delighted our Al Osra customers have taken to these bags and our initiatives enthusiastically.”
Each high quality reusable shopping bag will have the potential to eliminate thousands of plastic bags over its lifetime.
Each year, an estimated 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide with billions ending up as litter.
As part of a BMMI initiative to act caringly towards the environment the BMMI is also looking into recycling bins for paper, bottles and cans. Bins used to be located at the Al Osra Supermarket location but unfortunately these had to be removed due to people dumping their general garbage in them and causing issues with the cleanliness of the area.
