After more than four years of playing regularly every Tuesday evening the Hidd Hackers social golfers said goodbye to Riffa Golf Club last week in their final tournament on the existing course.
The Hidd Hackers were formed in 2003 after a successful participation in that season’s Corporate Night Golf League led to the founder golfers establishing a regular Tuesday night group of social golfers which has grown in popularity over the years. Despite the humid weather and helped by some pre-round refreshments, a full group of 40 golfers turned out to play some fun competitions including a Random Progressive Age Alliance which favoured the older golfers, (and served to confuse everyone else) as well as side contests which included the shortest drive, most balls lost and brightest shirt. Winning the main event was guest Sam Hobday closely followed by Dena Wales and Barry Hobday. Best score in the alliance was the oldies group of Peter and Sara Thompson and Brenda Dixon whilst Peter also admitted to losing the most golf balls on the night. Other side contests were won by Steve Wagstaff, Barry Hofmeyr, Brenda Dixon, Adrian Corbett, Jon Dixon, Peter Thompson, Johan Pretorius and Rod Callon. The Club also took the opportunity to share fond memories of Alan Watkins, a member of the group who died suddenly a year ago, with Barbara Watkins presenting the prizes. The last function for the Hackers will be a gala dinner on Friday 7th September before the golf clubs are put away into storage until the new golf course at Riffa Views opens in April 2008.
