With the Rugby World Cup in full swing and England as the reigning world champions, it has emerged that 50 per cent of the population of England have no idea of the rules and consider them too complicated to even try to understand.
An ITV Broadband survey comprising an equal division of 2,158 men and women suggests that less than a quarter of the population is even aware how many players make up a team and many have predicted that this year’s winners will be Brazil, despite the fact that Brazil are the world’s greatest football (soccer) team and have never even taken part in a Rugby World Cup. While an overwhelming number of people intend to watch the tournament, it seems that over half of the women surveyed (52 per cent) intend to tune in purely to watch Johnny Wilkinson in action – and with legs like his, who can blame them? In all honesty my head is so buried in the sand that before reading about this survey I didn’t even know that the Rugby World Cup was on or that England were the current champions but now that I know that some of the best legs in sport are going to be on my television screen, it’s quite conceivable that I might have to turn over for a quick peek.
