Sashimi is a Japanese delicacy consisting of very fresh raw seafood sliced into thin pieces.
It is normally served with soy sauce, wasabi paste and thin slices of ginger root. Some of the popular sashimi is salmon, squid, shrimp, tuna, mackerel and octopus.
Non-Japanese often confuse sushi and sashimi as sushi often features raw fish also. However, sushi and sashimi are distinct and separate.
Sushi contains additional ingredients beyond fish which are rice and vinegar and it may even have raw vegetables instead of raw fish.
Sushi is made of vinegared rice and there are different ways of preparing it. Two popular ways of preparing sushi is when it is served rolled inside nori (dried and pressed sheets of seaweed), and sushi made with toppings with hand formed clumps of rice. It is normally served with soya sauce and wasabi paste.
