Wednesday (October 17) • Paintings and photos depicting life and peace-activist initiatives of Bahraini artist Abbas Al Mousawi at the Beit al Quran in Manama. About 50 works are on show including more than 30 pieces of a new collection of Islamic motifs, often employing calligraphy. The exhibition also showcases a collection of photographs. • ‘Eighth Bahrain Biathlon’ is organised by the Bahrain Road Runners at the Marina Club in Manama. The event will have a 600 metres swim in the sea with 8km run and the event begins at 8.30am. • Inauguration of the ‘Arabian Horses of Bahrain’   photography exhibition by Bahraini artist, Ali Al Koofi, at the Bahrain Arts Society in Budaiya at 7pm. The exhibition runs for 10 days. More information on 17590551.

Sunday (October 21)

 

• South Indian writer Perumpadavam Sreedharan is being flown down from Kerala for the Sree Narayana Cultural Society's (SNCS) traditional Vidyarambham initiation ceremony. Vidyarambham is traditionally performed on the day of Vijaya Dasami, the last day of the nine-day Navarathri festival that is regarded as the ideal day to begin education. Children below five are seated on the knee of a guru or teacher, who traces the first letter of the Malayalam alphabet onto a plate of rice. The event will take place from 4.30am at the SNCS in Salmaniya. It is open to members and non-members at a nominal fee. For details contact 39680390 or 39253831.

 

 

 

• A Vidhyarambham ceremony will be hosted by the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam in Manama from 4am. Parents are requested to register their children at the earliest and places, limited to 100, will be on a first-come-first-served basis. This year's guru is award-winning Indian musician and playback singer Kavalam Srikumar, who will be flown especially for the annual event. The ceremony is free for children of BKS members, while non-members will be charged a nominal fee.

 

Mr Srikumar will also conduct a four-day Musical Workshop for children that will cover aspects of classical music including pitch, rhythm and expression, including voice culturing and modulation. The workshop also taking place at the Samajam will run from October 21-24 and starts at 8pm daily. Priced at BD10 per her, it is open children above 10 years old. Monday (October 22)

 

• The Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam in Manama is celebrating the nine-day Navarathri festival until October 26. The festival features a host of dances from around India and musical concerts of Hindustani and Carnatic music. It is being held at 8pm every night at the Samajam and is free of charge. Tuesday (October 23)

 

• Mediterranean Night at the Al Waha Restaurant in Gulf Hotel, Juffair with fresh ideas, menus and themes.
