AS part of GPIC's policy of maintaining the safety of its employees, facilities and surrounding environment, the company has upgraded its fire-fighting fleet by the purchase of the most advanced Scanica fire engine from British company Carmichael.

The new fire engine can undertake fire-fighting operations with the use of both water and foam agents.

The company's concern with safety has been reflected by its success in winning prestigious occupational health and safety awards on the local and international levels and the new addition contributes to the enhancement of its fire-fighting capacity.

GPIC has also acquired two vehicles from UK company Angaleco, namely the Quick Intervention Vehicle (QIV), which is a small but powerful vehicle for quick intervention cases of any hazards as it has a tank of dry chemical powder for fighting most kinds of fires in addition to carbon dioxide cylinders for extinguishing electrical fires.

The second vehicle is a support truck that can keep a stock of additional fire-fighting materials and equipment and response to chemical accidents and gas leaks. It can also provide a power source through a diesel-operated power generator.

The upgrading process has gone further by the acquisition of mobile and stationery fire-fighting equipment such as an Ambassador pump used for pumping water and foam with a capacity of up to 6,000 gallons per minutes with a range of more than 140 metres.

Other water pumps have been replaced by hydro-foam pumps that ensure a more effective fire-fighting capability in addition to the easier control for transporting them to the fire scene.

GPIC general manager Abdul Rahman Jawahery said the upgrading of the emergency response fleet at this level took place during the last two years.
