Small is beautiful ... and just to prove it a special workshop for growing businesses and handicraft creators has been staged to help them to sell their products abroad.
The Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consulting (GOIC) in co-operation with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in the kingdom staged a workshop on 'Export promotion, procedures and documentation for small, medium and handcraft industries' this week.
The workshop at Bahrain Exhibition and Convention Authority Centre attracted 35 owners and centred around four key modules: Export Management and the Basic, International Market Research, Data Mining Techniques and Writing the Export Plan.
The total number of SMIs in Bahrain reached some 650 enterprises in 2006, compared to 544 in 2005; with an investment size of $405 million, compared to $328 million in 2005.
The workforce in this sector approaches over 33,700 workers, compared to 28,200 in 2005.
Most investments in SMIs in Bahrain are focused on metal products representing 27 per cent of total industrial investments, chemical and plastic products representing 18 per cent, then come food products with 15 per cent.
Finally, in spite of the fact that the investment size in SMIs in Bahrain does not exceed six per cent of the total investments in the industrial sector, this sector employs 66 per cent of the total workforce in the whole industrial field in the kingdom.
