Hi everybody. What a week it's been on the new 'Midday Madness' afternoon radio show!
As you can see by this week's photo we had celebrity chef Dominic Miles, the 'housewives choice' in the studio.
As I explained in last week's column, I'd invited him into the Radio Bahrain studios to celebrate Pancake Tuesday because for me, any excuse is a good excuse to involve food in my life and have a bit of fun too!
What a great time we had. He brought in lots of interesting and delicious ingredients to make both savoury and sweet pancakes and we started it off with a simple and traditional lemon and sugar crepe. Yummy!
I wanted to read out the recipes to the listeners and Dominic asked "did you get the email I sent you?" I replied in the negative, so he said: "Quick, get on the net and look for Delia Smith's webpage." Lo and behold there it was. So I rattled it off whilst Dominic did a 'live' cooking demonstration for the first time ever from the Radio Bahrain studios.
Dom created lots of different pancake variations; a very scrumptious one included bolognaise sauce, another had haloumi cheese and onion, and yet another (and one of my favourites) featured strawberries and chocolate.
All of a sudden people started appearing in the studio from all over the place offering to be official food tasters and sampling the delicacies on offer.
Our lovely newsreader Yasmina Annan enjoyed the fare so much she asked Dominic to give her a few tips on cooking.
The funniest part though was when I tried to toss a pancake in the air, flip it over and catch it in the pan. Unfortunately my pancake was very stubborn; it stuck resolutely to the pan.
I thought this was hysterical and laughed so much I did something a bit silly, I turned the frying pan upside down to see how well it was stuck.
The pancake stayed there for a whole 10 seconds before it began to fall to the floor, almost in slow motion.
I desperately tried to catch it (whilst wearing my headphones) and nearly strangled myself as a result. Funny, no-one wanted to eat that one!
But we had a blast. The final pancake was cooked especially for me using some chocolate truffles made by Dom's wife, Michelle. It was heavenly! Mmmmm.
Some listeners moaned at us though, because hearing us eat; slurping and munching down all that beautiful food made them so hungry themselves.
I suppose I shouldn't have said "can you smell the aroma wafting out of your radios?" But it was great fun, and I hope 'good radio' too.
There was a downside though; we aren't allowed do cooking at the radio studios again because the Perspex table warped where the hotplate was placed and needed to be replaced. So, next time it will have to be salad or sandwiches... or frozen cheesecake, or ice cream Sundays. So, watch this space!
The week was also a little weird at work because on the first couple of days on the new slot at the radio I just couldn't get used to saying "Good Afternoon" when for the last six years I've been saying "Good Morning".
I knew I would mess it up so I decided to give away a CD to the first person who caught me saying "Good Morning". It took all of about 10 minutes. Well done, Rachel Kirsopp!
Rachel also gets a special mention for starting us off with the first 'Our Tune' about how she and her husband Bob first met.
Their tune was Foreigner's 'I wanna know what love is'. After I read her real life love story and played their song I had lots of phone calls and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. If anyone else has got a special tune please send the details to me and I will play it for you on our special segment on Tuesdays at 1.05pm.
Well, last week in my article I mentioned that something happened on air at the radio that was even more tumultuous than the recent switch of timings.
It happened this very week seven years ago; when I proposed to my Wendy live on Bahrain Radio.
At that time I was sitting in for the afternoon DJ after having just starting doing part-time work at the station.
I asked Wendy into the studio on the pretext of helping answer the telephone with all the Valentine's Day requests.
I had ordered red roses and balloons and my 'plan' was to propose when they were delivered. However, being Valentines Day, delivery was over an hour late and I was really sweating whilst I waited, especially when we ran into the last 15 minutes of the show.
We were playing songs with the word 'love' in the title, and when the flowers finally arrived I proposed live on air with 'Friday I'm in love' playing in the background.
Not the best song I'm afraid, but now it's 'Our Song' and we'll never forget that day and the way we felt. (She said: Yes!)
